There were attacks in Kabul too this week as part of violence across the Muslim world.
This kind of violdence is rare in Kabul. It's particularly shocking to me, after I spent time in the city in April of this year. I felt completely safe while I was there (other than a rock thrown at me one night).
These videos were posted on Dvidshub, which is one of the main information outlets for servicemembers out in the field.
U.S. Marines, soldiers, and Afghan soldiers can be seen on rooftops in an intense gunfight trying to repel Taliban assaults. The Taliban is using small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. At one point you can see both American and Afghan helicopters in the air making straffing runs on enemy positions.
Then you can hear the "Take Cover" alarms blaring from the neighboring U.S. Embassy. Like most gunfights, there are lulls, and then suddenly fighting erupts.
There's almost no doubt that the U.S. armed forces stationed here never expected to be fighting. In the video you can clearly hear the "popping" sound of rounds impacting close to Coalition positions. This was clearly a complex attack.
The video ends as Coalition forces are yet again trading fire with what seems to be a stalwart enemy.
